Car Thefts Fuel Republican Governor Candidate’s Rise

This issue is finally coming to the forefront!

Like many parts of the country, Denver has been grappling with an out-of-control car theft surge which has impacted the metro area severely. In fact, car theft is so bad in Denver that the city now boasts the highest stolen-car rate in the entire United States. That’s not an easy feat considering how many cars are stolen in cities like Milwaukee, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. With the public fed up and looking for a solution, Colorado Governor Jared Polis has taken plenty of flack for his soft-on-crime tactics, giving his Republican challenger, Heidi Ganahl, a chance at unseating him.

In fact, Colorado has become the top state in the nation for car theft, according to a study from Common Sense Institute. That study concluded that during the first six months of the year, the car theft rate in the state rose another 17.2% to keep it in the top spot.

That’s how big of an issue car theft has become in Denver and other cities. Too many citizens know firsthand what it’s like to walk out in the morning only to find their sole source of transportation is gone. As they see reports about how police arrest the thieves, only for them to be back on the streets in just hours, frustration has built.

Polis has around his neck a law which went into effect about a year ago. It downgraded penalties for vehicular theft, helping to speed up the revolving door of justice, pouring fuel on the fire. It was all done in the name of justice, but many have experienced the exact opposite effect.

Feeling the heat, Polis has asked that this law he signed in 2021 be reversed, at least according to Colorado Republican Party chair Kristi Burton Brown. The message that the governor isn’t on the side of law-abiding citizens has been resonating with many, sending fear into the hearts of Democrats and Polis.

While polls favor Polis, this is a year when many polls could be way off, thanks to the return of the legendary “shy voter.” That’s not to say Ganahl has the upper hand, only that in a state which has been snugly Democrat for some time, the Republican candidate is drawing blood, showing just how key crime issues are for many voters. If this crimewave continues, Democrats could find themselves pushed off the cliff as desperate citizens try a different approach to solving crime.
