The new C8 Corvette ZR1 is so hot, a thief swiped two of them from Bowling Green Assembly in Kentucky recently. As far as we know, it’s the first recorded theft of the just-released American supercar, but we’re sure it won’t be the last.
Automaker suffers hack, allowing cars to be remotely unlocked from anywhere, and more.
Authorities quickly got to work tracking down and recovering both ZR1s. Both were initially found sitting in a parking lot in Bowling Green, but both supercars took off and police couldn’t keep up.
While one got out of town, the other one was stopped after it ran over a spike strip during the chase. As the old saying goes, you might be able to outrun cop cars, but you can’t outrun the radio.
However, the supercar reportedly didn’t suffer any other damage in the pursuit, reports local station WBKO, although we have to wonder about the wheel rims.
The second Corvette ZR1 was found two and a half hours away in Martin County, Indiana. That driver ditched the vehicle and go away on foot.
What we do know is the man who allegedly stole both C8 ZR1s is 20-year-old Daedrin Cook. He’s facing a long list of charges: engaging in organized crime, first-degree fleeing of evading police in a motor vehicle, first-degree wanton endangerment, theft by unlawful taking or disposition of an automobile between $10,000 and $1 million, first-degree criminal mischief, tampering with physical evidence, and obscuring the identity of a machine $10,000 or more.
In other words, they’re throwing the book at him.
As we covered before, back in March a group of men stole eight Corvettes from Bowling Green Assembly. The sports cars were all recovered and one of the thieves was caught, but the rest got away.
Now authorities are looking into whether the two heists were related or not.
