That Sinking Feeling: Car At Stoplight Falls Into Sinkhole

Imagine just chilling, sitting in your car at a red light when it suddenly falls into a sink hole that wasn’t there a second ago. That’s what a man in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina experienced recently and we officially have some more nightmare fuel for our insomnia.

Driver steering truck with vice grips gets into a bad accident.

Thankfully, in this case the driver was able to get out of the Honda Accord he was in without suffering injuries. And only the front portion of the sedan fell into a relatively shallow sinkhole. We’ve seen far worse and those situations are far more frightening.

According to the Myrtle Beach City government, the sinkhole was formed when a 12-inch water main broke near a construction site. We wonder if someone messed up with some heavy equipment and damaged the pipe without realizing it.

Anyway, the guy was sitting at the light where the Coastal Grand Mall entrance is on Harrelson Boulevard just about 4 am on July 29 when he got that nice little jolt. We bet that woke him up no problem whether he was headed to work or going home to climb in his warm bed.

The sinkhole mess not only ruined the road but also diminished water pressure in the area. The city then had to shut off the water, pull the Accord out of the sinkhole, then drain out the water, while also fixing the break in the water main.

After that, crews rolled in and started filling the hole and patching the road.

This incident highlights why everyone should carry a glass break in their vehicle. Even if you don’t live around much water, you should have one because something like this could happen to you. Being able to break your window and get out of the car before it sinks into a body of water could very well save your life.
