When police in California busted a Camaro for street racing, they found it had a retractable license plate device. We’ve seen these inventions used by those who also want to use public roads like drag strips. Surely police know they exist as well, but to see someone with one of these get busted is just beautiful.
Embarrassing: Camaro shows off, then crashes hard.
According to California Highway Patrol, the Camaro was racing a Ford Mustang in the Modesto area when the two muscle cars came upon a turn in the road. We know Europeans love to joke American muscle can’t turn, but sadly the Chevy driver played into that stereotype.
That’s right, he was unable to stick the turn, leaving pavement behind and crashing in an orchard. From photos the law enforcement agency took, the Camaro doesn’t look badly mangled and there’s no mention of injury.
The Mustang driver did the right thing, stopping to make sure the other guy was okay. We don’t know if they’re buddies already or if this was a street racer with a heart of gold. What we do know is he got busted along with the Chevy driver.
Some street racer types will say that proves why you just take off, but that’s a crime and if you’re caught, you could be facing more serious charges. The real lesson is that street racing is dangerous, dumb, and illegal, so it comes with consequences if you decide to cross that line.
Both drivers were arrested and face criminal charges.
CHP impounded both muscle cars, too. In the process, officers noticed the Camaro’s license plate retracted, then discovered the device, which was seized as evidence. Hiding your vehicle tag from view is after illegal, too, so don’t buy these things.
