The city of Oakland, California is the supposed birthplace of street takeovers, so we guess it’s fitting it hosts so many. There are so many there some residents who can’t afford to just move are beyond tired of it. While some have tried to install deterrent items in roads, the city just removes them.
Watch how police in Georgia deal with street takeovers.
Then violent takeovers like this one happen. People set off fireworks, drivers do smokey donuts, and some explosions that sound like more than fireworks sound out.
Plus, kids gather around and destroy an Infiniti, then light it on fire. We can all but guarantee the car was stolen and the kids at the takeover were helping destroy evidence of a crime, whether they knew it or not.
Hundreds of people, maybe more, were at the takeover. Yet it seemed police were too busy or too understaffed to do anything about it.
When word got out the cops were coming, everyone took off in a traffic jam of dozens of cars. By the time officers arrived on the scene, the Infiniti was full engulfed and all the suspects were long gone. Perhaps they went to terrorize another part of the city, which happens all too often.
This sort of thing has become all too commonplace in Oakland.
But city officials celebrated last week because two people who allegedly organized a takeover back in August were arrested and charged with felonies. While the names of those two suspects weren’t released by police, reports KTVU, OPD did recover six vehicles and a gun.
It’s a small victory considering how many takeovers happen in Oakland.
Other parts of the Bay Area are also plagued with these illegal events. Just last weekend, a teenager fell from an overpass in Crockett during one, dying from his injuries. These aren’t harmless gatherings.
