Texas Man Dies After Medical Emergency Leads to Dodge Challenger Crash on I-40

Amarillo’s streets saw tragedy Wednesday when a 73-year-old local man, Roger Howery, passed away after a medical emergency sent his white Dodge Challenger flying off I-40 into a chaotic wreck. Authorities say the car, speeding eastbound near Coulter, careened through traffic like a runaway bullet before plowing into parked vehicles just past Waldorf.

The aftermath was brutal. His Challenger smashed into a truck with enough force to send it crashing into a Tahoe, flipping the SUV like a toy, then bouncing into another car like some awful game of dominoes. Miraculously, those vehicles were empty, and nobody else got hurt. Paramedics rushed to help Howery, but it was too late; he was gone before they could do much.

Cops aren’t calling it anything suspicious. From the looks of it, a sudden health crisis probably jerked the wheel right out of Howery’s hands. Justice of the Peace Horn wants an autopsy to nail down the exact cause, but for now, it’s just one of those freak accidents that leaves folks shaking their heads.

Traffic snarled while crews cleaned up the mess—steel carcasses of cars strewn across the lot near an Outback Steakhouse, a place better known for bloomin’ onions than twisted metal. Investigators will keep piecing it together, retracing how a simple drive turned deadly in seconds.
