Police in Northern California ended an unusual vehicle pursuit Monday after a stolen dump truck led officers across multiple major highways before crashing in a construction zone in Sacramento.
The incident began around 4 p.m. Pacific time when officers in Roseville attempted to stop a stolen Mack dump truck. According to authorities, the driver failed to pull over and instead continued driving, prompting a pursuit that quickly moved onto Interstate 5. The California Highway Patrol later took over the chase as it continued across several freeways.
Officials said the pursuit lasted approximately 45 minutes and stretched from Interstate 5 to Interstate 80, eventually reaching Highway 50. During the chase, the large commercial truck was seen weaving through traffic and narrowly avoiding collisions with other vehicles. Video shared by a driver and later broadcast by KCRA showed the dump truck moving erratically as traffic cleared around it.

The pursuit ended when the driver entered a highway construction zone in Sacramento. Authorities said the dump truck crashed in the work area and overturned, bringing the chase to a stop. Despite the dramatic conclusion, officials confirmed that no injuries were reported.
The driver was taken into custody at the scene. According to reports, the suspect now faces multiple charges, including evading police by driving against the flow of traffic, felony evasion, possession of a stolen vehicle, vehicle theft, and felony vehicle theft with prior offenses.
Law enforcement did not release details about how the dump truck was stolen or how long it had been missing before officers attempted the initial traffic stop. Police also did not disclose whether the driver had any connection to the construction zone where the crash occurred.
While pursuits involving stolen cars are not uncommon, officials noted that cases involving heavy construction vehicles are far less frequent due to their size and limited maneuverability. The chase temporarily disrupted traffic along several major routes as officers worked to keep other drivers out of harm’s way.
Investigators continue to review the incident, including video footage from witnesses, as the case moves forward.
