Stolen Dump Truck Leads Police on 45-Minute Chase Across Three Sacramento-Area Freeways

A Traffic Stop That Didn’t Go as Planned

Police in Northern California ended an unusual pursuit Monday after a stolen Mack dump truck led officers across multiple freeways before crashing in a Sacramento construction zone. The chase began around 4 p.m. Pacific time when Roseville officers attempted to stop the stolen truck, but the driver refused to pull over, prompting a pursuit that quickly escalated onto Interstate 5.

A Slow-Motion Chase Across Three Freeways

The California Highway Patrol took over as the pursuit stretched across Interstate 5, Interstate 80, and eventually Highway 50, lasting roughly 45 minutes in total. Despite the truck’s size and limited maneuverability, video captured during the chase showed it weaving through traffic and narrowly avoiding collisions with other vehicles as drivers scrambled to clear a path.

Chase Ends in a Construction Zone

The pursuit came to an end when the driver entered a highway construction zone in Sacramento, where the dump truck crashed and overturned. Despite the dramatic finish, authorities confirmed no injuries were reported, either to the driver or to construction crews in the area.

Suspect Now Facing Multiple Felony Charges

The driver was taken into custody at the scene and reportedly faces several charges, including evading police by driving against traffic, felony evasion, possession of a stolen vehicle, vehicle theft, and felony vehicle theft with prior offenses. Police have not released details on how the truck was stolen or how long it had been missing before the attempted stop, nor have they said whether the driver had any connection to the construction site where the chase ended.

A Rare Type of Pursuit

Stolen-vehicle chases are a regular occurrence for California law enforcement, but officials noted that pursuits involving heavy commercial vehicles like dump trucks are far less common given their size and limited handling. The chase briefly disrupted traffic across several major routes as officers worked to keep other drivers clear of the truck’s path. Investigators are continuing to review the incident, including witness video, as the case moves forward.
