A Tennessee driver was carjacked and kidnapped in what authorities described as a targeted attack carried out by suspects impersonating police officers, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred around 8:25 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, in a residential area near Glen Eden Drive and Tulip Rose Lane in Shelby County. Deputies responded to reports of a carjacking and kidnapping involving a dark-colored sedan equipped with red and blue law enforcement-style lights.
Investigators said the victim had just entered his neighborhood when the sedan activated its lights, prompting him to pull over. Believing the stop was legitimate, the driver exited his vehicle. Authorities said he was then attacked and forced back inside his car. Two of the suspects entered the victim’s vehicle, while a third was believed to be involved in the incident.
The suspects drove the victim back to his home, where the situation escalated further. Investigators said the victim’s home alarm system was triggered upon arrival, causing the suspects to flee with the victim still inside the vehicle.
Deputies later located the victim’s car traveling at a high rate of speed and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. A pursuit followed but was eventually called off after deputies lost sight of the vehicle near Rideway and Interstate 385.
A short time later, the victim managed to escape from the suspects and reached a nearby business, where he contacted emergency services. Authorities confirmed that both the victim and his vehicle were recovered and that the victim was not seriously injured.
Investigators believe the attack was targeted and that the suspects were known to the victim. The identities of those involved have not been released. Law enforcement is continuing efforts to identify and locate the suspects, as well as the vehicle used to impersonate a police car.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing and urged anyone with information related to the case to contact authorities or Crime Stoppers.
