CHP Seeks Camaro Driver After 100 MPH New Year’s Eve Pursuit on I-580

California Highway Patrol officials are asking for public assistance in identifying the driver of a Chevrolet Camaro who evaded officers during a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 580 on New Year’s Eve. The incident occurred around 8:20 a.m. and was later detailed in a social media post by the Dublin-area CHP office.

According to CHP, an officer detected a blacked-out Chevrolet Camaro traveling at approximately 100 miles per hour. The vehicle, described as a sixth-generation Camaro, drew the attention of a speed enforcement officer, who attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Instead of slowing down, the driver accelerated, prompting a pursuit.

During the chase, CHP officials say the driver managed to obscure or disable the vehicle’s license plate before officers could properly identify it. Authorities described the plate as black with either yellow or white lettering. The ability to make the plate unreadable was a key factor in the driver’s successful escape.

Only a single image of the Camaro was released, and officials have not provided further details about the car’s specifications, including what engine it may have been equipped with. CHP also did not disclose why the pursuit was ultimately terminated, leaving questions about how the driver was able to evade capture.

CHP patrol vehicles commonly include Dodge Chargers equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine producing 292 horsepower, though the agency also operates a smaller number of Chargers with 5.7-liter V-8 engines rated at 370 horsepower. Officials did not comment on whether vehicle performance played a role in the outcome of the chase.

California allows the use of state-approved digital license plates, though those plates are not intended to be turned off or obscured at will. Reporting cited by authorities has shown that digital plates can be compromised, including demonstrations in which a plate was disabled through unauthorized access. CHP has not confirmed whether the Camaro involved was equipped with a digital plate or whether it had been modified.

The California Highway Patrol is urging anyone who witnessed the pursuit or has information about the Camaro or its driver to come forward as the investigation continues.
