CHP Seeks Camaro Driver Who Vanished After 100 MPH I-580 Chase

California Highway Patrol officials are asking for the public’s help identifying the driver of a Chevrolet Camaro who evaded officers during a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 580 on New Year’s Eve.

A Chase That Topped 100 MPH

The incident happened around 8:20 a.m. and was later detailed in a social media post from the Dublin-area CHP office. According to CHP, an officer spotted a blacked-out, sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro traveling at approximately 100 miles per hour. A speed enforcement officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but instead of slowing down, the driver hit the gas, kicking off a pursuit.

A Plate That Vanished Mid-Chase

During the chase, CHP officials say the driver managed to obscure or disable the vehicle’s license plate before officers could get a clear identification. Authorities described the plate as black with either yellow or white lettering — and the ability to make that plate unreadable turned out to be the key factor in the driver’s escape.

Only a single image of the Camaro was ever released, and officials haven’t shared further details about the car’s specifications, including what engine it may have had under the hood. CHP also hasn’t disclosed why the pursuit was ultimately called off, leaving open questions about exactly how the driver managed to slip away.

Could the Patrol Car Have Kept Up?

CHP patrol vehicles commonly include Dodge Chargers equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 producing 292 horsepower, though the agency also runs a smaller number of Chargers with 5.7-liter V-8 engines rated at 370 horsepower. Officials didn’t comment on whether vehicle performance played any role in how the chase played out.

A Digital Plate Loophole?

California allows state-approved digital license plates, though those plates aren’t supposed to be turned off or obscured on demand. Reporting cited by authorities has shown that digital plates can be compromised, including demonstrations where a plate was disabled through unauthorized access. CHP hasn’t confirmed whether the Camaro in this case was equipped with a digital plate or whether it had been modified in some other way.

The California Highway Patrol is asking anyone who witnessed the pursuit, or who has information about the Camaro or its driver, to come forward as the investigation continues.
