The California Highway Patrol is turning to the public for help identifying a Camaro driver whose license plate seemed to vanish mid-chase during a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 580 on New Year’s Eve — the same incident that’s already prompted a separate CHP appeal for tips on the vehicle itself.
Speed Wasn’t the Only Problem
The chase started around 8:20 a.m. that Wednesday morning, when officers from the CHP’s Dublin area spotted a Chevrolet Camaro traveling over 100 miles per hour. Officers tried to stop the car, but the driver accelerated and managed to evade law enforcement entirely.
Speed alone made the Camaro hard to catch, but officers say the pursuit got even more complicated once the license plate became unreadable. Authorities say the plate initially appeared black with yellow or white lettering before going dark once the chase was underway, and investigators believe the driver was able to black out or deactivate the plate specifically to prevent identification.
A Mystery Over How the Plate Was Altered
The tactic has raised real questions for CHP about exactly how the plate was modified. Authorities haven’t confirmed whether the Camaro was fitted with a digital license plate or some kind of custom modification built to obscure identification, and either possibility is concerning for law enforcement — particularly if this kind of technology or workaround is being used more broadly to dodge accountability during traffic stops or more serious crimes.
Asking the Public to Fill in the Gaps
Despite the pursuit, officers were unable to stop the vehicle or identify the driver, and the case remains open with the Camaro driver still at large. Law enforcement officials have acknowledged they’re now leaning on the public for help locating the vehicle.
The CHP Dublin Area Office issued a request for information shortly after the chase, asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has knowledge of the Camaro to come forward. Authorities say even small details could help identify the driver or shed light on how the vehicle was set up to obscure its plates.
The case is a reminder of the ongoing challenge law enforcement faces as vehicle technology evolves and drivers find new ways to slip past detection. Investigators are continuing to dig into the incident while asking the public to report any sightings or relevant information about the Camaro or its driver to the California Highway Patrol Dublin Area Office directly.
