Stolen SUV Rampage Turns San Diego Freeway Into Chaos as Suspect Flees With Dog

San Diego commuters didn’t just hit traffic Wednesday morning. They drove straight into chaos. An alleged trailer theft suspect turned Interstate 15 into a live-action demolition scene around 8 a.m., shutting down northbound lanes near Miramar and later crippling southbound traffic. Police say the woman, driving a black SUV with a dog inside, was being pursued in connection with a stolen trailer when the situation spiraled out of control. It didn’t take long.

Law enforcement pinned the SUV between patrol vehicles on northbound I-15, with a box trailer sitting in the next lane. That should have been the end of it. Instead, about 30 minutes later, the same SUV was seen driving the wrong way in southbound lanes, dragging what appeared to be the mangled platform of a severely damaged trailer. This wasn’t reckless. It was a rolling threat to every family trying to get to work or school.

Caltrans cameras and helicopter footage showed the SUV weaving between vehicles, bumping into several before finally slamming into the center divider. Only then did it become disabled. Drivers were forced to dodge an oncoming SUV barreling the wrong direction on a major freeway. One mistake from any side could have meant a multi-car pileup. And it still wasn’t over.

The woman exited the vehicle with a large dog and ran toward other cars, appearing to try to get inside as stunned drivers accelerated away. Strangers on a highway were suddenly forced to make split-second decisions to protect themselves.

Law enforcement ultimately detained her and placed her in a patrol vehicle. By shortly after 10 a.m., northbound lanes reopened, but southbound closures remained as investigators worked the scene.

This is the reality of unchecked criminal behavior on public roads. One stolen trailer. One suspect. Entire highways shut down. Innocent drivers put at risk. Morning commutes hijacked by someone who treated a freeway like a personal escape route.

Car enthusiasts fight constantly against rising insurance rates, tighter restrictions and mounting scrutiny. But incidents like this hand ammunition to every regulator eager to clamp down. Responsible drivers pay the price when chaos goes unchecked.

Wednesday morning was a blunt reminder: our roads are only as safe as the accountability we demand. And when someone turns a freeway into a getaway path, the system has to respond fast — and decisively.

All parties are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
