Stolen SUV Rampage Turns San Diego Freeway Into Chaos as Suspect Flees With Dog

San Diego commuters didn’t just hit traffic Wednesday morning. They drove straight into chaos instead. An alleged trailer theft suspect turned Interstate 15 into a live-action demolition scene around 8 a.m., shutting down northbound lanes near Miramar before later crippling southbound traffic too. Police say the woman, driving a black SUV with a dog inside, was being pursued in connection with a stolen trailer when the situation spiraled out of control fast.

Pinned Down, Then Somehow Loose Again

Law enforcement pinned the SUV between patrol vehicles on northbound I-15, with a box trailer sitting in the next lane over. That should have been the end of it right there. Instead, about 30 minutes later, the same SUV was spotted driving the wrong way in the southbound lanes, dragging what appeared to be the mangled platform of a severely damaged trailer behind it.

Wrong-Way Driving on a Major Freeway

Caltrans cameras and helicopter footage showed the SUV weaving between vehicles, bumping into several before finally slamming into the center divider, which is what finally disabled it for good. In the meantime, drivers were forced to dodge an oncoming SUV barreling the wrong direction on a major freeway, the kind of scenario where one mistake from any side could have triggered a multi-car pileup. And even then, the incident wasn’t over.

A Chaotic End to the Chase

The woman got out of the vehicle with a large dog and ran toward other cars, appearing to try to get inside as stunned drivers accelerated away from her. Strangers on a highway were suddenly forced into split-second decisions just to protect themselves from someone they’d never met.

Law enforcement ultimately detained her and placed her in a patrol vehicle. By shortly after 10 a.m., northbound lanes had reopened, though southbound closures remained in place as investigators continued working the scene.

Why This Matters Beyond One Chase

This is the reality of unchecked behavior playing out on public roads. One stolen trailer. One suspect. Entire highways shut down as a result. Innocent drivers put at risk simply because they were commuting at the wrong time. Morning commutes hijacked by someone who treated a freeway like a personal escape route rather than a shared public road.

Car enthusiasts already fight a constant uphill battle against rising insurance rates, tighter restrictions, and mounting scrutiny. Incidents like this one hand ammunition to every regulator eager to clamp down further, meaning responsible drivers end up paying the price when chaos like this goes unchecked.

Wednesday morning was a blunt reminder that our roads are only as safe as the accountability we collectively demand. When someone turns a freeway into a getaway path, the system has to respond fast and decisively. All parties are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
