This Is Why You Should Stay Off Gore Points

Many people drive over gore points on highways and other roads even though they don’t know what they’re called and probably don’t care. But driving over the triangular area where a road splits is dangerous for a variety of reasons, which is why it’s illegal.

Watch a Georgia trooper almost PIT a suspect into oncoming traffic.

One of the risks of driving over a gore point is that you’ll run into a road barrier head-on. We have a video of someone doing just that, driving straight through the gore point, tearing apart the front of their vehicle in a violent crash.

The gore point is supposed to help you steer well clear of those hard divisions. And many road barrier end points have been found to be fatal to motorists who strike them, so avoiding them would be wise.

A story out of metro Atlanta also serves a warning about staying out of gore points. The man drove into the gore point on a highway and hit cement prongs which wrecked his tires and wheels, costing him $2,000 in repairs.

The guy told WSB-TV he drove into the gore point because he was lost and needed to pull up directions on his phone. While it’s great he didn’t want to drive distracted, the gore isn’t where you pull over to take care of those sorts of things since other people drive through them.

It’s likely road workers installed those prongs to hold a construction sign a while ago, neglecting to remove them. But if people would stay out of the gore the prongs wouldn’t be an issue.

Cops sometimes sit in gore points as they run traffic enforcement or at looking for a suspect vehicle. That’s another reason to stay out of these painted triangles, lest you put the lives of law enforcement officers at risk.

But you’ll see people cut across gore points to make an exit at the last second all the time. It’s obvious many people don’t pay attention or just don’t care.
