Volvos are legendary for prioritizing safety. But even with the safest cars you’re never guaranteed to walk away from a crash. Thankfully, an XC90 driver in Vietnam didn’t just walk away from a horrific wreck where the Volvo was crushed between two vehicles, he ran just as the SUV was consumed by fire.
A road rager brings a hammer to a gunfight.
Footage of the crash aftermath and the man’s harrowing rescue was shared to Reddit on r/Volvo where it generated quite a reaction. That’s understandable considering the SUV, which was between another SUV and a commercial truck, looked so badly mangled nobody could have survived.
But the driver did, even though he was trapped inside. With all the doors crushed, he was likely panicking as the rear of the XC90 caught fire, probably from the fuel tank or the fuel line being ruptured.
However, some workers climbed onto the mangled hood and pulled out the damaged windshield, a smart move considering that was probably the last escape route that wasn’t crushed beyond use. However, the driver still needed help getting out.
Our first time watching the video we weren’t sure if some mangled human being was going to be pulled out of the Volvo because of just how bad the vehicle looks. But once they get the man free of the wreckage, he runs away, probably feeling the heat of the fire on his back.
Even better, the guy is barefoot. Maybe he was driving that way or perhaps his shoes were knocked off in the crash, we don’t know (it happens a lot). We bet he was just happy to not have burned alive, because that’s about the worst fate one can imagine.
Some are saying this is proof Volvo still has it when it comes to safety. Do you think this proves Volvos are the kings of automotive safety in these modern times? Or are there other cars you think would do as well or even better in the same scenario?
