A car enthusiast in Wolfforth, Texas is mourning after his 1939 Ford Coupe went up in flames outside a farmers’ market recently. It was a sudden, tragic end to the classic car, but at least nobody was hurt in the blaze.

According to the owner, the fire started suddenly when he pulled over on the side of the road to let pedestrians pass outside the farmers’ market on Sunday, October 13. He told Everything Lubbock he “heard a loud pop from under the hood” and flames shot out just seconds later.
Despite the fire department responding within minutes, the ’39 Ford Coupe was already engulfed in flames. It’s a good thing the owner was able to get out of it quickly or he might have gone up with it.
The man said the Ford Coupe was fitted with a small block Cobra 302 V8 paired with “a special transmission.” In other words, it wasn’t just a show car, it had some get up and go, too. But all that has gone up in smoke, literally.
It’s obvious he cherished the Ford and spent a lot of time building it exactly as he wanted it. He called it a family heirloom. Probably he was thinking of handing it down to a child or grandchild at some point.
He took it to car shows around the country, including once to the L.A. Roadster Show. It’s possible you saw it at some point.
From what the owner said, we don’t think he’s looking to rebuild the car, likely because it’s too far gone. He said at this point the grille and bumpers are about the only salvageable pieces, so he might keep those.
But he’s not building another ’39 Coupe. Instead, he says the plan is to build a classic truck he can give to his granddaughter.
