Stolen UK Range Rover Located 5,000 Miles Away in Pakistan

A Range Rover Sport stolen from a driveway in Harrogate, England, in November 2022 has been located roughly 5,000 miles away in Karachi, Pakistan, highlighting the scale of international luxury vehicle theft networks.

Tracker Signal Leads to Discovery

British authorities received a signal from the vehicle’s tracker earlier this year originating from Karachi, prompting an Interpol alert and coordination with Pakistani law enforcement. Investigators are now working to determine how the vehicle was removed from the country and transported overseas.

How Stolen Vehicles Are Smuggled Abroad

According to reports, stolen vehicles are frequently shipped in containers mislabeled as scrap materials or used parts. Once they arrive at their destination, they’re often issued fraudulent VINs and local registration before entering the resale market. A Karachi dealer familiar with the trade told reporters that demand for stolen foreign SUVs remains high, and most buyers are unaware the vehicles were stolen.

Legal Complications for Recovery

“Pakistan is bound to return the car,” international trade law expert Osama Malik told The Times, “however, the current owner of the vehicle will most likely involve the Pakistani courts as a bona fide purchaser for value who has legally purchased this vehicle.” His comment underscores how legal disputes can complicate recovery efforts even after a stolen vehicle is located abroad.

A Frequent Target for Theft

The Range Rover Sport has topped Britain’s most-stolen vehicle list for two consecutive years. Jaguar Land Rover has been working to improve security across thousands of previously sold vehicles in response. Thieves have adapted with increasingly sophisticated tools, including key fob cloning devices that can cost around £20,000, allowing them to steal vehicles quickly before transporting them toward ports for export.

The Scale of the Problem

A report from the Royal United Services Institute estimates annual losses from vehicle theft in the UK at £1.77 billion, with insurance premiums rising 82% since 2021. Roughly 130,000 vehicles are stolen each year in the UK, frequently taken directly from driveways.

Past Enforcement Actions

Last year, police dismantled an Oldham-based theft ring connected to nearly 100 stolen high-end vehicles. The ring’s leader, Asif Hussain, received a 15-year sentence after pleading guilty to conspiracy and export-related offenses.

Investigation Continues

The Harrogate case remains under investigation, with authorities continuing to work alongside international partners to determine rightful ownership of the vehicle and clarify how it ended up in Karachi.
