With keyless entry and ignition, some people have become lazy and just leave their key fob in their vehicle. We don’t really understand this habit but see stories of cars stolen this way, particularly in more affluent areas. But some teens in Connecticut took things a step further, attempting a home robbery after stealing the keys out of an unlocked Range Rover.
Watch a would-be C8 Corvette thief get trapped inside the car.
The two-part crime was captured on surveillance cameras back in early September. As the teens drove around on a moped through a nice neighborhood in Fairfield, one would jump off and check parked cars’ doors to see if they were unlocked.
This strategy is used by a lot of thieves. They often will rifle through the interior and take anything of value. Many times, if they find the key fob is left inside, they’ll just take the vehicle. But these teens didn’t do that, instead taking off with the key fob and other keys on the ring.
All of that was captured on a neighbor’s surveillance camera. But what happened that night was recorded by the victims’ doorbell. The two teens, wearing hoods and masks, tried opening the front door of the house as the victims slept.
One can only imagine what they had planned if they gained entry into the home. Instead, the key the thought went to the front door instead was for a shed in the backyard. After failing to get through the front door lock, they tried the shed and were able to get in there, but Fairfield Police haven’t shared if the teens took anything out of it. We imagine they likely did since they were already stealing stuff from unlocked cars.
This was a pretty bold crime, one that involved at least some planning. After all, the teens decided it would be best to return in the middle of the night and try getting into the house, likely knowing they could catch the family inside by surprise.
We can’t believe we have to say this, but people need to stop leaving their key fobs in their cars. It’s a dumb idea and is even more dangerous if your house key is on the same ring. Lock your vehicle, take the keys inside, and put them in a Faraday cage for good measure.
