Car accidents are just a part of life, but figuring out who’s at fault in a crash is a job that’s not always easy for police. That’s why having a dashcam, like the one used to record this video, can make a huge difference, especially when you can show the footage to police and insurance companies, swaying the outcome.
Who’s at fault in this crash between a crossover and a train?
But we want to ask you who you think is at fault in what just might be the slowest, most avoidable crash we’ve ever seen. You’ll see what we mean as the whole thing unfolds like two sloths running into each other, and you’ll probably question how both drivers didn’t see it coming.
That’s not the real point, though, What we want to know is who should’ve been cited for causing the crash. Ultimately, someone has to be held at fault, both for a citation from police as well as for the insurance claims.
We can’t imagine either vehicle suffered much damage. After all, the collision was at such a low speed the paint might not have sustained more than some scratches. Then again, with the way modern vehicles are, we wouldn’t be surprised if there were several thousands of dollars in damage done to sensors.
Back to the crash: Our camera car is directly behind a white Honda CR-V as it pulls up to a four-way stop. To the left, an older GMC Sierra also pulls up to the stop sign at the exact same time.
We know most people don’t know what to do in this situation. Sometimes both cars wait until one person waves the other one through the intersection. Other times both go and a honking battle ensues. Then there are the times people play chicken and the one with the nicer vehicle or more sense stops short.
Instead, these two drivers proceed into the intersection at the same time and the Sierra slowly T-bones the CR-V. How neither of them saw this crash coming is a mystery, because it happened so slowly and was so obvious.
The big question is was the GMC or Honda driver at fault? That all comes down to who was supposed to go first. The law says when two drivers reach a four-way stop at the same time like this, the one to the right is supposed to go first. In other words, the Sierra driver is at fault because he was supposed to give the Honda right of way and didn’t.
That the GMC driver was at fault couldn’t have been proven to police or insurance without dashcam footage like this. So, the real answer is get a dashcam for your car, it can help clear up these types of situations in a hurry.
