Law enforcement has identified what they describe as a fraudulent classic car dealership operation called Maize Motors, which police allege was collecting deposits and payments from customers for classic vehicles that either didn’t exist or were never intended to be delivered. The operation reportedly presented itself as a legitimate classic car dealer with an online presence and sufficient apparent credibility to convince buyers to part with significant sums of money. Investigators began examining the business after multiple victims filed complaints about payments made with no vehicles received.
Online classic car fraud has become increasingly sophisticated, with fraudulent operations learning to create convincing web presences and using social media to establish apparent legitimacy with potential victims. The combination of high vehicle values, the emotional investment buyers have in acquiring specific classic models, and the prevalence of long-distance transactions in the collector car market creates conditions where fraud can be executed with relatively sophisticated presentations. Law enforcement investigators who specialize in online fraud are increasingly focused on the classic car segment as it becomes a more frequent target for these operations.
