Police Say Classic Car Dealership Maize Motors Is Simply A Scam

A classic car dealership called Maize Motors, or at least what appears to be a dealer, is in fact a giant scam, says Maize Police Department. It appears someone is using the logo and name of a defunct dealership out of Maize, Kansas in an effort to defraud car enthusiasts looking for a deal.

Another EV company has filed for bankruptcy.

Maize Police Department is trying to spread the word after it researched the website, which lists an address and phone number in the Kansas city, determining the entire operation is a giant scam. We visited the website, which we’re not going to provide the address or a link to for obvious reasons, and it looks legitimate.

But we’ve seen scammers do this sort of thing before. They’ll sometimes take the name and other information from a dealership that’s no longer in business, or they’ll just copy one that is. They’ll also copy entire listings for cars that other dealers have for sale, including the photos. This makes detecting the deception harder.

While in this case the scammers set up a website, sometimes they just advertise on Facebook Marketplace or through other online listings, pretending to be a legitimate dealer while using the inventory on the website.

And many times they target people shopping for classic cars. Since it can be hard to find a specific model nearby, many enthusiasts will buy vehicles located in another state, paying for it to be shipped to their area. Scammers take advantage of that.

One rule of thumb to go by is that if a deal seems too good to be true, it likely is. Dig deeper and get more information, not just on the car itself but also the dealership. In this case you would find the dealer is no longer in business.

While not always feasible, going to see the vehicle in person before buying it is also a great way to short circuit these scams. If you can’t do that, have a friend or family member who lives in the area help.

Looking online to see others’ experiences with the same dealer is also a great idea. Slow down, take your time, research everything thoroughly, and that cuts down on the chance you’ll be scammed.
