Army football player Larry Pickett Jr. and his dad are being hailed as heroes after the two rescued a car crash victim. Despite the situation posing a danger to the two men, they got the single occupant of a BMW out of his ride safely before something worse happened.
The Grappler Bumper is once again getting national attention.
The crash happened in the early morning hours of September 7 in Fort Montgomery, New York. After having dinner with his family in New York city, Pickett and his father witnessed the Bimmer hit a power pole, knocking down multiple electrical lines which almost completely surrounded the vehicle.
In footage of the rescue, you can hear a woman yell, “Larry! Come on! Come on! Get him out!” before the sophomore football player and his father run over to the vehicle, navigating the live power lines, and carry the driver to the other side of the street.
Not too long after, the Bimmer caught fire and was quickly consumed by the flames. There’s no doubt the father and son saved the man’s life.
In the video, you can hear the crash victim come to and express confusion about where he is. The man doesn’t believe the burning car across the street is his. However, he denies having had anything to drink, saying he doesn’t know how he crashed.
Pickett has been given high praise for the heroic rescue. West Point’s official X account honored him in a post, calling his actions “heroic” and “the embodiment of US Army values.”
Tom Theodorakis, West Point Director of Athletics, took to X to say the man and his father both demonstrated values taught at the military academy and that he was proud to see such behavior off the field.
