What’s Causing the Fire Risk
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue affects Ford and Lincoln models equipped with 2.0-liter or 2.3-liter engines and block heater systems. Cracks can develop in the block heater’s solder joints, allowing coolant to leak into nearby electrical components. As the coolant evaporates, it can leave behind conductive salt deposits capable of causing a short circuit, particularly when the heater is plugged into a 110-volt outlet without a functioning circuit breaker or ground fault interrupter.
Warning Signs Owners Should Watch For
Ford is advising affected owners not to plug in their engine block heaters until repairs are completed. Potential warning signs include coolant puddles, reduced cabin heat, engine overheating, low coolant warnings, or smoke and unusual odor from the engine bay.

Ford has received reports of 46 vehicle fires connected to the issue, most originating in Canada, though no injuries or accidents have been confirmed.
