Porsche appears to be changing course once again on its mid-engine sports cars. After previously confirming that the next-generation Boxster and Cayman would be fully electric, the automaker now plans to offer both electric and hybrid versions, according to recent reports.

The move would mark a significant shift for the brand’s entry-level sports cars, signaling that internal combustion isn’t going away just yet. Sources suggest the upcoming Boxster and Cayman could feature a six-cylinder hybrid system similar to what’s found in the latest 911 GTS hybrid. If accurate, that would represent a notable upgrade from the current turbocharged four-cylinder engines that power the base and S models.
Porsche’s decision reportedly stems from stricter emissions standards and customer feedback. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder used in today’s cars may not be reworked to meet upcoming Euro 7 regulations, prompting the company to pivot toward the larger six-cylinder hybrid setup.
While the return to six-cylinder power will likely excite enthusiasts, there’s a tradeoff. Hybrid components—particularly the battery and electric motor—will add weight compared to the outgoing models. Still, Porsche’s engineering reputation suggests any added mass will be offset by sharper performance and improved efficiency.
The dual approach mirrors the brand’s broader strategy seen across its lineup, where electric and hybrid powertrains coexist with traditional engines. It’s a move aimed at easing long-time fans into the electrified era without losing the trademark Porsche driving feel.
No official launch timeline has been confirmed, but the next-generation Boxster and Cayman are expected to debut before the end of the decade.
