Most dogs who do something well they get a belly rub and maybe a crunchy treat, but one K9 who helped track down some car thieves got something more. Rusty, who works for the Cheltenham Police Department in Pennsylvania, was given the United States Police Canine Association, Inc. 3rd Quarter Excellence Award.
Cop barks like a dog to fool car thieves.
Now that award is quite the mouthful and we doubt Rusty really knows what it is, but his handler and department are definitely proud of his accomplishment. The dog was specifically given the accolade for his Outstanding Performance in the Detection and Prevention of a Crime in a case related to some car thieves.
Rusty, being the good boy that he is, was on patrol with his handler back in July when neighboring Abington Police let Cheltenham Police Department know about a carjacking at gunpoint in the area the day before.
The suspect spotted a marked patrol car and panicked, crashing the stolen car. He and two passengers jumped out the vehicle and fled on foot, with officers running down one of the passengers while the other two got away.
However, Rusty was able to pick up the two guys’ scents and tracked them to a private property where they were inside a greenhouse, hiding under some tables. Without the K9 officers might not have found the suspects. Instead, Rusty led his colleagues to just a few feet away from the concealed thieves.
We’re sure the two guys who had ditched the wrecked stolen car were intimidated by Rusty as well. Many criminals are scared of getting bit by a K9 and for good reason. We’ve been told it really hurts and the dogs won’t release until commanded.
Join us in helping to celebrate Rusty as well as all the other K9s who help track down car thieves and other criminals.
