Hyundais And Kias Are The Most Stolen Cars In America

Estimated read time 2 min read

The numbers are in and sister brands Kia and Hyundai sit at the top of the car theft rates for 2023. The National Insurance Crime Bureau just released its report on theft trends last year, and to the shock of many nary a Hellcat or Scat Pack or any Dodge even cracked the top ten.

Learn why police love the Ford Mustang.

In fact, Kias and Hyundais dominate the top ten most stolen vehicles for 2023, occupying six of the spots. One has to question if this has something to do with certain models not featuring an engine immobilizer and social media posts coaching kids on how to easily steal them.

Topping the list at number one is the illustrious Hyundai Elantra. It’s followed by the Hyundai Sonta and Kia Optima as second and third, respectively. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500, which is a top ten mainstay, sits at number four.

Fifth is the Kia Soul, followed by the Honda Accord. The Honda Civic is seventh and the Kia Forte occupies number eight. The Ford F-150 and Kia Sportage round out the list at nine and ten.

We notice the Kias and Hyundais on the list are lower-level model lines which were included in the engine immobilizer recall. That can’t be coincidence but NICB doesn’t mention that in the official press release, so we might be drawing a parallel that isn’t relevant.

Whatever car you drive, understand thieves at one point might try taking it. Not all stolen cars are chopped up or sold. Some are used just for joyriding or to commit other crimes, sometimes violent acts.

Everyone should install extra security on their vehicle, including some sort of tracking device, if not two. Parking in a secured building like a garage at night is an excellent idea, as is locking your doors, closing the windows, installing surveillance cameras, and not leaving valuables inside your ride.
