Usually, car thieves don’t get arrested after a rooftop chase, but that’s exactly what went down in Queens, New York recently. Bodycam footage also captures how the teenage suspect plowed the stolen Nissan Altima he was driving into a New York Police Department officer in a chaotic getaway.
Stolen cars used in smash-and-grab robberies.
The footage, shared with the media by NYPD, show officers corner the suspect on a narrow road lined with parked cars. But 19-year-old Keyah Richardson doesn’t just surrender, even as the officer whose bodycam footage we’re watching draws his sidearm, ordering the teenager to get out of the vehicle.
Most people would be scared to death in that situation and would comply immediately. But this kid Instead slams the Nissan into reverse, backs up onto the sidewalk while striking one of the cars on the road. He almost hits a mother and her young child walking right there.
Even as the officer continues yelling commands through the open driver’s window, Richardson hits the accelerator and worms his way through the tight spaces on the one-way street. In the process, an officer tries jumping out of the way, getting pinned between the Nissan and a parked car.
The escape does plenty of damage to the Altima and other vehicles, but the teen is able to get away.
At least he gets away for a bit. After abandoning the hot ride a few blocks away, he thinks to escape by getting to the roof of one building and hopping from structure to structure like something out of a movie.
However, the boys in blue were hot on his trail and were able to stop his creative attempt at escape. It was a wild chase we don’t think could be fully appreciated without the bodycam footage. Check it out for yourself.
