Illinois Police Successfully Use GPS Dart During Chase

Police in Oak Brook, Illinois are doing a bit of a victory lap after they successfully used a GPS dart to track some fleeing suspects. News coverage of the device is once again garnering attention from normies who have no idea such a thing exists and what it means for the future of law enforcement.

Learn how thieves are using GPS trackers to steal your car.

According to CBS Chicago, all Oak Brook Police cruisers are outfitted with the GPS dart system. That’s easier and cheaper for smaller law enforcement agencies to do, with larger fleets putting them on select vehicles since they have much higher costs to cover.

Oak Brook officers jumped into a chase that was initiated by neighboring Elmhurst Police, who started pursuing a crew of armed burglars (we think they might mean robbers) in an Alfa Romeo. Dashcam footage shared with the news station shows an officer stick the back of the fleeing vehicle with a dart before dropping back, allowing the getaway car to slip away.

Likely the fugitives figured they were just so good at driving or were being reckless enough that police gave up. What they didn’t know was police were then tracking their every move, maneuvering units to corner them.

While these GPS darts are cool technology, they’re not foolproof and so they can’t just replace all pursuit methods or technologies. But they are a handy tool to have on hand, for those agencies which can afford to put them on cruisers, giving cops an alternative to chasing suspects if they can get a clear shot and the dart sticks.

We see a story like this every few months, but it’s possible in the not distant future we’ll see them more often as more law enforcement agencies opt to outfit cruisers with the technology.
