We have to admit one of our deep fears, other than drowning in a sinking car, is being caught in a car fire. If the flames hit the fuel system at all, it can become intense instantly, burning out everything but a vehicle’s frame and the non-composite parts of the body.
Watch police rescue a woman trapped inside her submerged car.
This video footage from a firefighter’s perspective while fighting a car fire helps show just how intense such a blaze is. Before the guy really approaches the raging inferno, you can see the flames have licked through the interior and mostly gutted it. And the horn is just continuously going off, adding to the intensity of the situation.
But even as the firefighter who’s wearing the camera gets on the front of the hose from the firetruck and starts spraying down the car, the fire doesn’t just extinguish. With the fuel tank compromised underneath the backseat, the inferno keeps getting new life, so the firefighter has to keep putting out flames which ignite.
This just goes to show your little onboard fire extinguisher is of limited use. In a situation like this it’s simply useless. That’s not a comforting thought, but it does help emphasize why if your vehicle starts smoking or especially if you see flames you need to pull over, shut it off, and get out fast.
After pouring on gallons and gallons of water, this firefighter is finally able to put out the majority of the fire. However he and his colleagues have to keep hunting down hot spots hiding under the hood, in the wheel wells, and every other nook and cranny. It’s an intense job.
Seeing how much of a crispy critter this car becomes by the end of the video just validates our fear or car fires.
