If you’ve ever had a car stolen, you get why watching this suspect with a stolen truck get tackled by Las Vegas police officers is so satisfying. After all, you’ve probably fantasized about doing this and worse to the person who put you through a hellish situation. Just the violation alone of having your ride swiped, let alone dealing with insurance and everything else, is enough to make your blood boil.
Stolen car victim in California voices frustration at the lack of consequences.
So instead of seeing yet another theft suspect treated with kid gloves and released on the streets within a couple of hours after getting arrested, in this video we see the guy get surprised by a swarm of cops and taken down.
According to OnScene TV, which was there to record the takedown, the stolen Ford F-250 was picked up by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Fusion Watch system. The network of cameras and plate readers detected the truck and alerted officers, who cornered the suspect as he was stopped at a gas station.
You can tell the suspect was caught off guard when the first cop runs up to him. The guy didn’t have time to run or even really react, and that was the idea.
As the officers wrestle the guy and cuff him, you can hear the suspect shout out, “What did I do?” The plea of ignorance while getting arrested is so common, we don’t know why criminals even try this with police.
This tactic, aided by modern technology, helped police avoid a chase through the city. It’s great to see, but we know these tools don’t always work so smoothly and that they come with a price.
Flock cameras, plate readers, and other public surveillance can help catch criminals, but they can also be used by authoritarians who want to go after certain groups. We have mixed feelings about the technology in policing, but it seems with incidents like this these camera networks are only becoming more popular and it’s understandable why.
