Thieves are constantly devising new ways to steal your car, including carjacking by staging an accident with a cyclist. That very thing happened in Ontario not too long ago, costing a woman her 2024 Cadillac Escalade, not exactly a cheap ride to have taken at gunpoint. How she was carjacked is actually pretty clever and scary.

McLaren has a new owner.

The woman was in a shopping center where there are big box stores like Costco and Home Depot when a cyclist hit the side of her luxury SUV. In a situation like that, your natural inclination is to get out and see if the person is okay.

When she did that she made herself vulnerable. One effective way criminals make someone in a vehicle an easier target is to get them to step outside. After all, you’re not as mobile and you don’t have that extra layer between you and them.

As the woman was outside her Cadillac to see if the cyclist was injured, a sedan pulled up behind her vehicle. Two men got out, produced a gun, and threatened the victim if she didn’t hand over the keys.

Thankfully, the woman wasn’t injured, but the men did take her Escalade. She realized the “accident” with the cyclist was a ruse when the man got up and fled the scene with the other two guys, reports York Region.

That’s a pretty smooth way to steal a car, we hate to say. We’ve seen other staged accidents used to execute carjackings, so it’s not like this is an entirely original idea. But we hate to admit it would work on most people.

After all, you’re not going to just take off after a guy on a bicycle runs into your ride since legally that would be a hit and run. These carjackers are taking advantage of people’s decency and their wanting to obey the law, which is scummy but expected from such individuals.
