Cars get stolen all the time, but a $900,000 2023 Ferrari SF90 Spider getting boosted by thieves is a big deal. Thankfully, when that did happen in Portland, Oregon recently the owner had an anti-theft measure in place to help police recover the Italian supercar undamaged and only hours later.
Road rage fight allegedly turns into robbery.
Exactly how the Ferrari was stolen by 36-year-old Kevin John Miller isn’t clear in a report from KOIN, only that it was reported as stolen to Portland Police around 2 pm on December 19. Instead of the owner being perplexed, he was able to give officers some incredibly valuable information.
The SF90 Spider was equipped with a GPS tracker. We’re unsure if it was a factory unit or something the owner had installed as an aftermarket feature since the report doesn’t bother to mention that detail. Either way, the guy made sure the tracker was working and was able to give police the location of his vehicle in real time.
Using the wonders of the radio along with the GPS location provided by the Ferrari owner, police quickly spotted the Avorio colored supercar, which sticks out like a sore thumb just about anywhere it goes.
After doing some detective work, police tracked down two men seen walking away from the supercar, determining that one of them, Miller, was the one who originally stole it. An image shared by police of the man being arrested shows an officer holding the vehicle’s key fob, so we assume that’s how it was stolen.
In other words, the car was recovered with zero damage just a short time after it was reported as stolen.
Because we see this so often, we wonder if the SF90 Spider was left with a valet service and Miller swiped the key from the valet booth. That would explain how he stole the Ferrari and had the fob. Either way, this story serves as a great example of how having a working GPS tracker in your ride can help you get it back quickly.
