People are shocked at a new video circulating on social media of two boys who appear to be under the age of ten, some are saying they’re seven, with a likely stolen and crashed Hyundai Sonata in Detroit. After all, they’re the same age as many people’s kids who are more concerned about who they’re going to hang out with on the playground and what update is coming to Minecraft instead of how to get away with stealing cars.
Watch police in Ohio arrest an 8-year-old kid for car theft.
The footage opens up with two men sitting in a truck watching as the kids get out of the Hyundai, which has quite a bit of front end damage, and pull away parts that are rubbing against the front tires. That includes part of the bumper cover and an inner fender liner.
When the kids notice they’re being watched, the men laugh to themselves, one of them nervously remarking he hopes the boys don’t crash into their truck. Considering what we’ve seen in the past, it’s a valid concern.
As the Hyundai drives by, we can see the rear driver’s window is gone, a sheet of plastic that’s ill-fitting flapping in the breeze. Likely, someone broke the glass to get into the Hyundai and do their thing using a screwdriver and USB charging cable, something that’s downright commonplace in far too many cities.
Some are speculating the boys stole the car from a close relative, a parent or maybe an aunt. We’re not so sure because we’ve covered kids as young as eight stealing cars, including some performing armed carjackings.
With how simple some Hyundais and Kias are to steal, thanks to their lack of an engine immobilizer, even young kids could steal them with ease. It’s a real problem in many US cities and something needs to be done about it.
