Three men have been arrested in Miami Beach, Florida after they were caught with ultra-luxury vehicles stolen from car transport services. We recently covered one of the thefts, a Rolls-Royce that was purchased by a man in the Detroit area, but it disappeared in transit. Now we know what happened to the ride.
Theft network that stole from Roush Performance headquarters busted.
Just like we’ve seen over and over in the past couple of years, these guys found a way to hack into the car transport services’ systems. They posed as the vehicle owner, directing the transport driver to make delivery elsewhere.
All they have to do then is patiently wait for the vehicle to be unloaded before the keys are handed over. And that’s it.
Miami Beach Police shared with local station WSVN-TV photos of some of the cars the three men had at the time they were caught. One was a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, the other a Lamborghini Urus.
When the men appeared in court, the judge had to have two translators present, one for Russian and another for Armenian.
Police believe the three men are just a few of a larger network in this sophisticated theft ring. They’re working at tracking down the rest, although we bet there’s a significant number outside the US in countries that don’t extradite.
Police told WSVN-TV people should use GPS trackers on vehicles they have transported, that way they know where the ride is at all times. It’s not a bad idea, but many of these cars haven’t been in the owner’s possession, having been bought long distance from a dealer which then ships the vehicle using the car transport service.
We hate to say it, but groups like this usually know exactly where the factory GPS tracking system is and can disable it with ease, so that sadly doesn’t always work. Perhaps they can ask the dealer to drop an AirTag or some other aftermarket tracker in the ride? With how much people pay for these cars, it’s a miniscule expense which could save a whole lot of trouble.
