Ford Recalls Broncos For Part That Corrodes And Falls Off

Ford has issued yet another vehicle recall, this time certain Bronco models for a part that can corrode and suddenly fall off, creating a road hazard for other drivers. This comes at a time when the automaker has been dealing with an abnormal volume of recalls, plus expensive lawsuits, adding to its woes.

SEMA is pushing for Congress to end California’s EV mandate.

In total, Ford is recalling 149,449 Broncos from the 2021 to 2024 model years. According to a Safety Recall Report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the long flange rear shock absorbers can corrode between the external reservoir, mounting flange, and damper body leading to the external reservoir just falling off.

Before the external reservoir falls off, Bronco owners might notice their off-roader bounces more, makes an odd noise, or that fluid is leaking near the rear wheels.

According to Ford, Broncos with the Sasquatch trim are affected by this recall. Ford has taken corrective action after a long flange design was identified as the cause of corrosion buildup, switching to a short flange for all Sasquatch models starting on May 1, 2024.

But that means there are almost 150,000 Ford Broncos that could experience the problem. Ford and NHTSA haven’t developed a remedy to the problem yet. But the automaker is reaching out to vehicle owners to let them know a solution will be coming.

In other words, if you take your Ford Bronco Sasquatch to a dealership for the recall, they won’t be able to fix anything, yet. However, if you’ve had the external shock reservoir on the rear come off, or have experienced more bounciness in the ride, noises, or fluid leaking near the rear wheels, we’d got a dealership’s service department and have the rig looked at.

This recall isn’t going to do much to promote Ford’s image, especially in the face of other recent quality control problems. Having pieces of a vehicle that’s under five years old falling off while you’re driving down the road is never a good look.
