Ford Issues Second Mustang Recall To Fix An Incomplete Earlier Recall

Ford has issued a second recall for certain Mustang models to address a deficiency in a previous recall remedy that proved not to fully resolve the problem it was designed to fix, continuing a frustrating pattern of incomplete recall fixes that has affected the automaker’s safety and quality reputation. The secondary recall covers vehicles that had already been through the service associated with the first campaign but that are still exhibiting the behavior the recall was supposed to eliminate. Dealers are receiving updated repair procedures that Ford believes will provide a more complete and durable resolution to the underlying issue.

Multi-stage recalls involving the same defect across sequential campaigns are relatively uncommon but not unprecedented in the automotive industry, and they typically result from situations where the initial diagnosis identified a symptom rather than the root cause, or where the root cause fix proves less effective in the full range of real-world operating conditions than it was in controlled testing. Ford owners who have already had their vehicles serviced under the initial recall are being notified about the additional required service, and the company has acknowledged the inconvenience while emphasizing its commitment to ensuring the ultimate resolution is durable.
