A Chicago police officer who was arrested by Tempe, Arizona police while on vacation for allegedly squealing his tires has filed a lawsuit against the Tempe Police Department, claiming his arrest was unlawful and that the responding officers behaved inappropriately. The case has created an unusual situation involving an off-duty officer from one jurisdiction being arrested in another for what the defendant characterizes as a minor traffic matter. The lawsuit asserts that the arrest was disproportionate and seeks damages for what the plaintiff describes as unjust treatment.

The case has generated interest both because of the police-versus-police dynamic and because of the question it raises about whether officers from other jurisdictions receive differential treatment — either more lenient or stricter — when encountered in official capacities outside their home territory. The Tempe department has defended its officers’ conduct, and the litigation will proceed through the Arizona court system. The Chicago department has indicated the matter is a private legal action by the individual officer rather than an official department position.
