Like a number of other cities, Kansas City has been struggling with kids and even some adults riding dirt bikes, ATVs, and other small vehicles recklessly on city streets. We covered last month how a police officer was run over and critically injured by an ATV rider. Recently, a female pedestrian was hit by a dirt biker who was popping a wheelie.
Another state has increased its top speed limit to 80 mph.
The incident in question happened on May 2 in an area with many restaurants as people were celebrating ahead of Cinco de Mayo. As the victim was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk. It happens quickly, as captured on some rather blurry surveillance footage.
People who witnessed the crash say the dirt biker stopped to see what happened, then suddenly took off. Honestly, we’re surprised the rider stopped at all. We see these sorts of hit-and-run incidents with unregistered small off-road vehicles all the time and they usually just keep going without skipping a beat.
Thankfully, the woman who was hit only suffered some cuts to her head. In far too many cases, people are seriously injured or even killed by this lawless behavior.
What really gets us is locals say the area where this happened has frequent problems with people on dirt bikes, ATVs, etc. speeding around and riding recklessly. While Kansas City Police say they’re concentrating on enforcement in that and other areas where this problem is prevalent, people are obviously frustrated.
Just last weekend, KCPD dropped the hammer on these takeover scofflaws, arresting 12 people and pledging to keep the pressure up. We hope they do, because in cities where authorities have been persistent, we’ve seen this type of activity fizzle out.
When enforcement is infrequent and consequences are laughable, these kids will just keep riding recklessly while laughing about it.
