Controversy has erupted and federal regulators are investigating after a video a Tesla Robotaxi going the wrong way has surfaced. The video clip, which is taken from a man’s recording of his entire ride of over 22 minutes, is being posted all over social media.
Lamborghini executive says e-fuel is the future of ICE.
What you see is the autonomous car approaches an intersection in Austin, Texas and signals it’s going to turn left, getting into the left turn bay. However, as it crosses into the intersection, the vehicle goes straight.
As it reaches the other side of the intersection, the steering wheel jerks back and forth slightly, the AI obviously briefly confused, before it drives through the left turn bay for opposing traffic.
That turn bay was clear of any other vehicles, but critics point out the Tesla did cross over a double yellow line, a big no-no.
This 🧚♀️ called me a retard because I posted this video of the Tesla Robotaxi driving on the wrong side of the road. They despise honesty. https://t.co/SApbzNLGn9 pic.twitter.com/1HoCdhrNEh

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating this and a claim that another robotaxi was speeding. Federal regulators are obligated to look into any claims of autonomous vehicles not operating correctly, something we’ve seen with Waymo and other robotaxi services many times in the past.
You can see in the video there’s a Tesla employee riding in the front passenger seat, ready to intervene in the event of a serious problem. But he does nothing during the brief wrong-way incident.
Fans of Tesla and its new robotaxi service argued the vehicle corrected its mistake safely and nothing dangerous happened. But critics of Tesla are using this brief clip from a trip that was otherwise uneventful to “prove” the company is falling apart at the seams.
We’re curious to see what NHTSA concludes with its investigation, although we don’t expect to hear about the results for some time. And if other robotaxi services are any indication, we expect to see more videos of Tesla cars doing odd things.
