An Arkansas State Police trooper deployed a PIT maneuver against a fleeing BMW that resulted in both the target vehicle and the patrol cruiser rolling over, producing dramatic footage of one of the more chaotic pursuit conclusions in recent dashcam archives.
The PIT maneuver at high speed carries risks precisely because the target vehicle’s reaction is not fully predictable. When the technique is applied to a rear-wheel-drive vehicle like many BMWs at significant velocity, the rotational forces introduced can exceed what either driver can manage, potentially sending both vehicles into uncontrolled rolls.
The trooper was injured in the rollover but survived. The BMW driver was also injured but survived. Both were transported for medical evaluation. The outcome added to ongoing discussions within law enforcement about the speed thresholds at which PIT maneuver deployment is appropriate.
Arkansas State Police reviewed the incident through its standard protocol and determined whether the deployment fell within or outside its pursuit and intervention policy guidelines.
The BMW driver faces serious felony charges related to the pursuit, with the injuries sustained by the trooper adding aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer to the list of counts depending on how prosecutors interpret the driver’s culpability for the resulting crash.
