Three kids were put through a harrowing ordeal after they were kidnapped in their mother’s stolen car in Southern California. After a long chase with police, the suspected crashed the vehicle into another car, ditching it and the children in an attempt to get away.
Watch a Mustang wreck out on a Wyoming mountain.
It all unfolded at about 6:40 pm on August 29 in East Los Angeles. The mother parked at a convenience store and ran inside, leaving her Chrysler 200 running while the kids, ages 2, 6, and 8 inside alone.
However, the father was parked nearby in another car. But he wasn’t able to stop a man who walked up to the Chrysler, jumped into the driver’s seat, and took off. As KTLA reports, the father was dragged alongside the vehicle for a short distance, suffering injuries to his upper body.
Unsurprisingly, when Los Angeles Police caught up with the Chrysler, the thief and kidnapper didn’t just pull over. Instead, he led officers on a chase all the way to Malibu, sometimes going slow, other times pushing the car in excess of 60 mph.
At least the guy wasn’t going 100-plus. But we’re sure the experience was horrifying for the kids.
As the Chrysler blew through a red light at an estimated 64 mph, it T-boned another car waiting to turn left. The impact was hard enough to send the innocent bystander vehicle careening into other cars nearby.
The Chrysler 200 overturned as it went off the road. Rather than make sure the kids were okay, the thief jumped out and ran away on foot. He was tracked down and arrested in a nearby neighborhood.
Sadly, all three kids were injured in the crash and taken to the hospital, although all of those injuries were non-life-threatening in nature. A woman in another car was also hospitalized.
The big lesson here is to never leave your kids sitting alone in a vehicle, even if you’re going to just be a minute. It’s even worse to leave the engine running because there are people who will take advantage.
