We bring you yet another video of police, this time in Mesa, Arizona, successfully using the Grappler Bumper, only in a sneaky way. So far, most dashcam footage of Grappler use has been during an active chase, but this one involving a stolen car is a little different.
Watch dashcam footage of a Grappler ripping the rear axle off a car.
You can see the suspect vehicle, a red Chevy Cobalt, driving down a road when several marked police cars turn from side streets and start following. One would think any criminal and even regular people would notice such a thing and get nervous, suspecting a trap.
That might be why in the next shot, which is from a traffic camera like the first, it shows the same car driving in a different part of the city. Gone are the marked cruisers. It might have even been on a different day – Mesa Police Department hasn’t released any details about it.
Perhaps the suspect ran from the marked police cars so a new tactic was deployed: the Grappler Bumper.
Several unmarked police units trail behind the Chevy when one lowers the arms on its Grappler device, then snags the driver-side rear tire in the device’s strong webbing.
The suspect veers to the left, perhaps sensing a trap but not realizing he’s already caught. That’s when another unmarked unit helps pin the stolen car that’s already on the line and several others pull over by the Cobalt.
However, the suspect doesn’t want to just give up, even though he’s obviously caught. He jumps out of the stolen car and tries running, something he obviously doesn’t do enough. That’s when bodycam footage shows one of the officers catch up to the guy, pushing him down.
We don’t get to see the suspect get tased, but the officer said it was coming and you could hear his taser charging up.
This is the first time we’ve seen an unmarked police car use a Grappler Bumper in a non-pursuit situation. Obviously, this guy had already shown he was willing to run from police, so we think the move is smart. We also expect to see more law enforcement agencies use it on suspects who have a habit of running.
