Drivers across Wake County, North Carolina, are on high alert following a series of disturbing rock-throwing incidents that have damaged vehicles and left motorists shaken. Local law enforcement agencies are investigating several cases where objects were thrown at cars while they were in motion—incidents that could have easily turned deadly.

Mary Gillett was one of the first to speak out, posting on social media after her car was struck on Purnell Road near Wake Forest around 10:15 p.m. “A set of headlights passed me, then there was a huge crash on my windshield and my hood,” she said. The impact left her car with a cracked windshield and dents, causing several thousand dollars in damage.
The Wake Forest Police Department is investigating three cases, while the Wake County Sheriff’s Office is handling at least one linked to Gillett’s. Authorities say they are pursuing multiple leads. “What we’re worried about is somebody getting hurt. Fortunately, so far, nobody has,” said Sgt. Kurt Steinberger of the Sheriff’s Office.
Another driver, Frank DiPaolo, experienced a similar scare while traveling along Camp Kanata Road with his wife. “As soon as I got near the golf course, I saw something large come toward the car,” he said. His SUV sustained over $2,500 in damage, including a broken headlight and front grille. When he returned to the scene, he discovered two other drivers had also been hit—one vehicle with a spark plug lodged in its windshield and another with a destroyed side mirror.
Investigators believe the suspects are tossing heavy objects from passing vehicles, taking advantage of low visibility at night. Community members are spreading warnings across social media, urging drivers to stay vigilant.
“I just hope someone comes forward before there’s an accident that seriously injures somebody,” Gillett said.
