Over 500,000 California Vehicles Have Rolled-Back Odometers, Report Finds

More than half a million vehicles currently on California roads are estimated to have rolled-back odometers, according to new data from Carfax, highlighting a growing issue that can leave car buyers facing unexpected costs and financial risk.

A 14% Jump Nationwide

Carfax reports that the number of vehicles nationwide with altered mileage has increased 14 percent compared to last year, a sharp rise that outpaces increases seen in prior years. Of the approximately 2.45 million vehicles in the United States believed to have false odometer readings, California accounts for the largest share by far.

California Leads the Country

The report estimates that nearly 22 percent of all vehicles with rolled-back odometers are located in California, totaling about 532,200 cars. That figure puts the state well ahead of Texas, which ranks second with an estimated 333,900 affected vehicles, and Florida, which ranks third with roughly 109,000.

The Real Cost to Buyers

Rolled-back odometers misrepresent how much a vehicle has actually been driven, often making it look newer or less used than it really is. That can significantly inflate a vehicle’s perceived value and mislead buyers about potential maintenance needs down the road. According to Carfax, consumers who unknowingly buy a vehicle with altered mileage lose an average of $3,300 in value — and that estimate doesn’t even include additional repair or maintenance costs that can surface due to undisclosed wear and tear.

Federal estimates point to the scale of the problem too. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that more than 450,000 vehicles are sold each year with false odometer readings, purchases that can create long-term financial consequences including higher car payments, inaccurate insurance valuations, and disputes that sometimes require legal intervention to resolve.

What Buyers Can Do About It

Carfax notes that resolving an odometer rollback fraud case can be both time-consuming and costly, sometimes requiring legal representation, and the issue can complicate ownership, resale, and insurance claims, especially when the discrepancy surfaces long after a purchase is completed.

To help consumers spot potential issues before buying, Carfax offers an online tool that lets drivers check a vehicle’s mileage history by entering its VIN or license plate. With used car prices still elevated and demand holding strong, the report is a clear reminder to verify a vehicle’s history before completing a purchase, particularly in states with high rates of reported odometer tampering.
