Stolen Mustang Hits Uber, Kills Two

Estimated read time 2 min read

We know a lot of people who think the car theft problem doesn’t really impact them, even though that’s far from the truth. Just because your car hasn’t been stolen doesn’t mean you haven’t dealt with higher prices for cars and parts, steeper insurance rates, and other crimes literally driven by stolen vehicles.

A traffic stop helps police recover two stolen Cadillac Escalades.

One sad example is a fatal crash in Pinellas County, Florida between a speeding stolen Ford Mustang and an Uber rideshare vehicle. It happened on the night of December 6, leaving the driver and passenger in that Uber both dead.

Before the crash, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office contacted Florida Highway Patrol after deputies tried stopping the stolen pony car, reports ABC Action News. During the attempted stop, 22-year-old Leosvany Arias Roman crashed the Mustang into a deputy’s car but sped off after.

When troopers tracked down the pony car, they say it was blasting down I-275 at over 140 mph. A trooper tried stopping the suspect, who hit the FHP cruiser, flipped around, rammed the cruiser again, then took off going the wrong way on the interstate.

Shortly after was when the Mustang hit the Uber vehicle, a Dodge Grand Caravan, head-on. While the 33-year-old driver and a 52-year-old passenger were killed, the 24-year-old and 51-year-old passengers sustained serious injuries but survived.

The trooper whose car was hit twice by the suspect sustained minor injuries. As for Roman, there’s zero mention in the report about his being injured, so he might have somehow escaped unscathed, although looking at the photo that doesn’t seem likely.

You could be minding your own business, just going to the store, when some car thief comes speeding the wrong way and slams head-on into your vehicle, changing your life forever. This is why the rampant car thefts in this country matter so much.
