While people in some areas don’t seem to know the difference between fireworks being set off and a gun being fired, people in Harris County, Texas immediately knew when several rounds were squeezed off one night. When deputies showed up, they found the target of at least some of the gunfire: a Hyundai which was rapidly sinking in a retention pond.
Watch a guy crash his rental C8 Corvette.
One resident stepped outside and saw someone drive the Hyundai into the pond, then swim to shore. That person claimed about five gunshots rang out in the night on December 18.
Deputies found bullet holes near the car’s trunk, but nobody was inside, so it wasn’t an execution and attempt to dispose of evidence. That means there’s a good possibility the person seen swimming away from the car was shot at by someone else and ditched the car afterward.
Investigators also noted damage around the steering column. To use the famous so-called TikTok Challenge method of boosting Hyundais and Kias, let’s just say the shrouding on the steering column isn’t left in place. In other words, it’s likely the car was stolen, then used to commit other crimes and that led to the shooting.
Even though the apparently stolen car didn’t come from the neighborhood, it ended up there. That vehicle brought with it a shooting, once again showing how car theft fuels violent crime. Thankfully nobody was reportedly shot, but residents were understandably rattled by the event.
This is a great time to remind anyone with a Hyundai or Kia to check with your local dealer on getting the security update. While that doesn’t guarantee your ride won’t be stolen, it can help prevent theft. Taking other security measures, including using a tracker on your vehicle is also a good idea.
