Garage Door Opener Remote Left Inside Vehicle Allows Thieves To Steal Cars

Estimated read time 2 min read

A family woke up on the morning of August 3 to find the two cars they parked inside their garage gone. What allowed the thieves to easily steal them was a garage door opener remote left in a third vehicle, a mistake we see exploited by criminals all the time. Yet so many people do this very thing.

Watch thieves carjack an Aston Martin from a residential garage.

This theft went down in Livingston, New Jersey sometime the night before or in the early morning hours. All the suspects had to do was open a Honda sitting in the driveway, which was left unlocked, finding the garage door opener inside, reports TAPinto Livingston.

Even if you lock your ride sitting in the driveway or street out in front of your house, keeping a garage door opener remote inside is a dumb idea. Once thieves have that, they can get into your garage without any trouble.

The second mistake the victims made was they didn’t lock the door leading from the garage into the house. Once the thieves tried that door and realize it wasn’t secured, they went into the mudroom and grabbed the keys to the two rides in the garage, stealing them.

Thankfully, that’s all the suspects did. The scary part is they could have decided to attack the family and do so much more.

In this case, police found both of the stolen vehicles not too long after in Newark. We wonder if they had tracking devices, providing the owners with their exact locations.

It’s worth pointing out that a skilled thief can exploit a garage door opener without the remote. This is why you can’t rely on the opener as a security device and should use the deadbolt lock on the door leading from the garage into your house.
