Most people feel the inherent need to protect their children, whether from or even sometimes the consequences of their actions. But as a parent you sometimes need to step back and let children learn, especially when they’re adults making adult decisions. However, this father in Arkansas decided to step in with his handgun and stop a repo man from taking his son’s car in a move we would at best call stupid.
Carjackers shoot a Ferrari in a California mall robbery.
In the footage, you see the tow truck come in fast and start scooping up the bank’s car as it sits in front of the trailer home. But if you pay attention, a guy in orange sees the truck and starts running down the road towards it, spelling trouble.
The orange shirt guy is the debtor and he tries standing in the way of the repo, literally. When that doesn’t work, he gets in the car. Not long after, daddy and his friends start showing up, yelling at the repo man, threatening him, blocking the tow truck in, etc.
Finally, the father has had enough and he pulls out his gun. That’ when the repo man drops the car and decides to leave. But daddy and his friends aren’t done. They chase the tow truck, brandishing the firearm and making it clear the repossession company is never to return or else.
At the end of the video, the repo man is able to get a cop’s attention, who then confronts the group of men at a gas station. It’s unclear what happens from there, but we bet it was nothing good.
It’s a dumb move by the father for more than one reason. First off, holding up anyone doing something lawful, like repossessing a vehicle that’s owned by the bank, can come with criminal penalties. That’s especially true when the alleged crime is caught on camera, like in this case.
Second, the father is just teaching his son that if you don’t want to or can’t pay for things, using the threat of violence to keep that stuff is acceptable. Maybe this lesson has already been taught before in other ways, maybe in the same way. But it’s not a responsible thing to pass on to your child.
One more thing: a lot of repo men carry guns. Holding one up, threatening to shoot him, is a great way to get shot yourself. This repossession agent was surprisingly calm about the situation, but others might not give the father so much grace, preferring instead to shoot first and ask questions later. We doubt daddy understands or appreciates that.
