During this year’s Corvettes at Carlisle gathering in Pennsylvania, an incident at an installer’s tent left a C8 Corvette in a precious position. The four-post lift the mid-engine sports car was sitting on failed, partially collapsing so the vehicle sat uneven, threatening to topple to the ground.
Mysterious C8 Corvette sparks an online debate.
A rescue operation had to be launched to get the ‘Vette off the lift. That involved a flatbed wrecker gently maneuvering to allow for an even enough transition between it and the ramp that the low-slung sports car didn’t scape bottom or otherwise suffer a breakage.
In other words, there wasn’t a lot of room for error. We can only imagine the tension the installers, vehicle owner, and tow truck operator must have been feeling in that moment.
The rescue operation was caught on camera by YouTuber Corvette Dan. You can see how gingerly they had to back the C8 off the lift and how close of a shave it was for the passenger-side of the vehicle as that was the part of the lift that was sitting higher.
After making some adjustments midway through with the wrecker’s bed, the crew was able to successfully back the ‘Vette to safety. We don’t see any damage in the video footage and hope there’s nothing hidden that resulted.
What’s being blamed for the four-post lift failing is a cable which apparently broke. We don’t see why that wouldn’t cause such a failure. But there might be more to it than just that.
The lift was put on a concrete slab under the installer’s tent, but the posts weren’t bolted into it. We’re sure there are reasons for why that was done, but not anchoring the lift will compromise its structural integrity, which might have contributed to the cable’s failure.
What do you think happened? And would you put your car on four-post lift that isn’t anchored to a solid surface?
