Far too many car thieves these days are minors, a problem which just about every city must face. The unfortunate truth is these kids who have often been recruited by theft rings or learned how to boost cars through social media posts can end up maiming and/or killing others as well as themselves. A fatal accident involving a 14-year-old suspect in Pearland, Texas illustrates such a tragedy.
Learn about the trend helping fuel juvenile car theft.
As documented by OnScene TV, back on September 3 the 14-year-old suspect was fleeing police when he lost control of the Kia Forte he was driving. The report doesn’t mention if the car was stolen or not, but we can almost guarantee it was in part because of its make and model year.
Like a lot of kids that age, the suspect wasn’t all that skilled of a driver, at least not enough to get away from police. He ended up wrecking the Kia into a concrete barrier, not only surviving the collision but also remaining free of major injury.
The kid should’ve quit while he was still drawing breath, but many of these youths don’t realize just how dangerous a police chase is for them, let alone everyone else.
Once out of the car, he ran on foot along State Highway 288. Police lost sight of the kid as he crossed the busy highway, a dangerous maneuver which cost him his life after a car hit him. The kid’s brain wasn’t developed enough to realize being arrested by police was a far better outcome than risking his life for a chance to get away.
And that’s where a good portion of the tragedy is in cases like this. We don’t think these kids deserver to die, even if they do steal cars. While they probably don’t realize they need to change, there’s still a chance they could turn things around. But sadly, many don’t and some die in their denial, with others killing innocent bystanders in chases, armed carjackings, etc.
